Becoming Board-Certified For a doctor to become board-certified by the ABPS, he must first:

- Graduate from a recognized and accredited medical school

- Complete at least three years of training in general surgery through an accredited residency program

- Complete a minimum of two years of training in plastic surgery through an accredited residency program

- Hold a medical license

- Pass comprehensive written and oral exams

- Complete a six month probationary period in which all operative reports and pre and postoperative photographs are reviewed and accepted by a panel of board-certified plastic surgeons
